🧢 1st XIv CA Charles Arkcoll · HomeformDLTLDWon the toss on Saturday and, with scarcely a flicker of doubt, sent Charles Arkcoll in to bat — a decision I stand by, whatever the scorebook later suggested. E A Brooks made rather a nuisance of himself, ratcheting up a well-made fifty and running on to 88, well supported by J Parsons (31) and Edgar Humphreys (29), before our attack finally wrestled back some pride. J Watman was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, and honourable mentions to Bert Buckoke and J Barker, three apiece, for sharing the spoils.
Our reply was built, as so often this summer, on the calm head of P Brattle, unbeaten on 39 and the mainstay of the innings, with E Cheeseman chipping in a useful 24. I managed 39 myself, for what it's worth, though the less said about our lower order the better — Bert Buckoke, A Smith and J Barker all took the long, ducking walk back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers.
P Brattle now sits proudly atop the 1934 run charts and J Watman leads the wicket-takers, so the season's honours board is, at least, in good hands even if the rest of us are still finding our feet.
In the end neither side could force the issue, and a draw was a fair, if faintly unsatisfying, reflection of an afternoon where honours were shared all round.
