๐งข 1st XIv SC 1st Innings Royal Army Ordanance Corps ยท HomeformWWLLWI elected to bat when I won the toss at Linton Park on Sunday last, the pitch looking a fair one and the sun kindly disposed towards us. It proved the right call, though not without its moments of anxiety, for we lost a wicket with the score but 1 and the eleven might have been forgiven a shiver in the pavilion. Joe Fenner set about repairing the innings with a plucky knock of 26, the mainstay of our effort, and it was pleasing to see a total of 117 assembled from 23.5 overs, though the closing overs brought a flurry of wickets from 121 for seven to all out at 128 that rather resembled a collapsing deckchair. Richard Harris, J Wenham and Don Hartridge each made the sorry walk without troubling the scorers, and the extras column, generous to the tune of 39, did us no small service.
The Royal Army Ordnance Corps, when their turn came, found no comfort against our bowling. An early stumble at 0 for 1 set the tone, and we ran through their order in short order, from 24 for four to 27 for seven in the twinkling of an eye, with R Mills, P Bailey and G Nurse all departing without scoring. Dennis Smith bowled quite beautifully, spinning his way to 5 for 29 and thoroughly deserving of it, while R Dann and Gordon Fenner chipped in with two apiece. The visitors were dismissed for a mere 38 from fourteen overs, and I permitted myself a small contribution with bat in hand along the way.
We ran out winners by the handsome margin of 88 runs, a thoroughly satisfying afternoon's work and one played, I should say, in the best traditions of the club.
