Bearsted CC came to Linton Park on a Bank Holiday Monday full of promise, and I'm not entirely sure whose promise it was, because our top order rather forgot to bring their bats. With the ball J Clark and L Crundwell held things together with 24 and 20 respectively, though the sight of Bert Buckoke and F Amies trudging back for ducks did rather test the patience of those of us watching from the boundary rope with a cup of tea and a wince.

Restoring some pride, we came out to bowl with a spring in our step. L Crundwell, clearly not finished with his day's work, took an excellent 4-43, while C Hartridge (2-7) and J Piper (2-18) chipped in nicely to keep Bearsted honest. W White proved the stumbling block with an unbeaten 29, well supported by Major Taylor's 28 and R A Palmer's 23, but we did have the satisfaction of sending Frank Harnett, M Corps and B Beech back without troubling the scorers. Behind the stumps it was, shall we say, an adventurous afternoon — eleven byes is not a figure any wicketkeeper wants read out at teas.

With A Piper still leading our run charts for the season on 97 and L Crundwell now firmly out in front with the ball, the individual honours are shaping up nicely even if the collective effort left something to be desired. In the end honours were shared, and on the evidence of this display, a draw was a fair and frankly merciful outcome for both sides.
