🧢 1st XIv ? · Awayform—Thursday the ninth of June, 1864, saw us take the field first, and for a while it looked rather promising. Three of theirs trudged back without so much as a run to their name — L Reader, H Reader and H Hider all fell for ducks — as J Woollett ran through them for four wickets, well supported by M Fullagar (three) and C French Jnr (two). All out, and we fancied our chances.
Then we batted, and the wheels came off with genuine club-cricket flair. E Price, W Goad and C French Snr all made the same long walk back for nought, and I shall not dwell on my own contribution beyond confessing it too was a duck — your correspondent leading by such poor example that the less said, frankly, the better. Behind the stumps W Goad had an afternoon to forget as well, the byes column ballooning to nine, or perhaps eight, depending on which end of the ground you were counting from.
There were bright spots amid the wreckage. C Waghorne's 16 runs eased him past H Sands into second on the club's all-time run-scorers list, and J Woollett's nine wickets did likewise, vaulting him past F Garrett into second among our wicket-takers — both now lead this season's 1st XI charts to boot.
Beaten by 64 runs, then, and no arguing with that margin. A chastening day, but a character-building one, and we'll be sharper for it next week.
