๐งข 1st XIv SC 1st Innings Collier Street CC ยท AwayformโThe road took us out to Collier Street on Thursday last, the ninth of June, and finding ourselves invited to the leather first, we set to with a will. Our opponents batted, and it must be said they found little comfort at the wicket, for J Woollett bowled with rare venom and command to finish with four wickets, well supported by M Fullagar with three and C French Jnr with two. L Reader, H Reader and H Hider were each sent back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers, and the innings closed with our bowlers thoroughly the masters of the afternoon.
Our own turn at the wicket, I am bound to confess, brought us less credit. E Price, C French Snr and I myself were each dismissed without scoring, and I must own that my duck sat no easier for the honesty of it, nor did matters improve when I took up the gloves, for the byes crept past me more than once and added unhappily to our opponents' account.
There was, however, cause for quiet satisfaction amid the disappointment. C Waghorne's innings of sixteen runs carried him past H Sands to second place upon the club's all-time list of run-scorers, and now leads our first eleven's run charts for the season, while J Woollett's fine haul of nine wickets this year has taken him past F Garrett into second among our wicket-takers, and leads the season's bowling too.
We were beaten in the end by sixty-four runs, a margin that flatters our opponents' skill more than it condemns our own, and we return home resolved to do better in the matches ahead.
