A dispatch from Yalding, then — a soggy toss lost, a chase declined to us, and a proper old-fashioned hiding taken.

Sent in to bowl first, we made Yalding work harder for their runs than the scorebook perhaps suggests, though it never quite showed. E J Ball anchored things nicely with an unbeaten 33, R Watson chipped in with 31 and H Reeves added 20, while at the other end F Reeves and A F Gurney trooped back for ducks without so much as scuffing the leather. A Jessop was the pick of us with a fine 4-43, George Champion snapped up three for nothing, and Jack Fryer got his reward too with one.

Our reply, alas, was a rather more threadbare affair. C Murdoch batted with real application for 33, and Champion — busy man — followed his bowling with 24 more runs. After that it rather fell away, with J H Coles, W Peach and F Worley all contributing golden ducks to the cause. I did my bit with 24, and enjoyed a tidy 3 wickets with the ball to console myself on the long journey home.

Champion continues to lead our run charts for the season with 241, and sits second in the wickets column with 5 — the form of the summer, and no mistake.

Beaten by 197 runs in the end, which is not a misprint. We'll be better for it next week — we rather have to be.

We hosted Brenchley CC on Bank Holiday Monday, and won the toss — I had no hesitation in taking first knock, feeling the wicket would only get harder to bat on as the day wore on. As it turned out, we made rather harder work of it than I'd have liked, and were bowled out for our trouble, with poor H S Smith walking back for a duck that rather set the tone. Still, a total is a total, and I fancied we had enough to defend if the lads held their nerve in the field.

And hold it we did. Brenchley's reply folded in similarly abrupt fashion, all out themselves, though not before X Hadden had given us a fright with a stylish 56. The Philpotts, J G and W B, both departed without so much as a run to show for it, and F Reeves was quite simply unplayable, spinning through the order for 7 without conceding a single run — figures I doubt we shall see bettered in a hurry. George Champion (2-0) and Arthur Cornwallis (1-0) mopped up what was left.

Amid the wreckage, a couple of items for the mantelpiece: F E Wallis's 14 runs took him past W H Fryer into 12th on the club's all-time run-scorers list, while H G Smith's solitary wicket saw him leapfrog Walter Wright into 13th among the wicket-takers. Champion remains our leading run-scorer this season with 217, and Reeves tops the bowling with 7 wickets.

For all that, Brenchley strolled home by 9 wickets. Not our day, gentlemen — heads up, and back to the nets.

Wednesday 19 June 1901, and Rolvenden CC rolled up to Linton Park under skies that, for once, seemed to owe us a favour. I won the toss and had no hesitation in taking first knock — the right call, I still maintain, whatever the lads mutter in the pavilion.

Jack Fryer set about the visitors with a handsome fifty, the pick of a innings built on sound support from P T Oyler (43) and F E Wallis (30), the latter's runs quietly nudging him past Leslie Wilson into 13th on the club's all-time run charts — the kind of statistical footnote that means rather more to the man himself than to the scorebook. Runs, at least, we had in reasonable supply.

Defending it proved another matter entirely. A E Bishop simply declined to be parted from the crease, compiling a magnificent 147 while W H Dixon (77) and A Elsam (26 not out) lent capable assistance. Small mercies: R W Hilder departed for a duck without troubling the scorers, and H G Smith bowled tidily for 2-0, well backed by P T Oyler's 2-0 — though against an innings of that magnitude our bowling figures read rather like brave rearguard action.

Beaten by six wickets in the end, and no arguing with the arithmetic. Bishop was simply too good for us. We'll dust ourselves down and be better for it next week.

Saturday saw Town Malling CC roll up to Linton Park, and having lost the toss I can't say I was sorry to be asked to bowl first — there's a particular pleasure in having the new ball in hand before the tea urn's even warm. Their number three, W H Cooper, rather spoiled the afternoon's plans with a superb hundred, 118 of pure quality, well supported by F Longhurst's 28 and F G Busbridge's 20. Credit to the lads, though — C B Mercer and P Phillips both departed for ducks at our hands, which offered some small consolation amid the carnage.

Chasing down that lot looked a tall order over tea, but the side batted with real substance. I confess to a certain quiet satisfaction leading from the front with 104 — three figures on a day when they were badly needed — while R Watson's fine 70 and H G Smith's unbeaten 70 gave the innings the backbone Cooper's century had threatened to take away. Not to be overlooked, Jack Fryer's tidy 15 nudged him past F S W Cornwallis into third on the club's all-time run-scorers list, a landmark worth raising a glass to.

We got there by six wickets in the end, and two points banked feels thoroughly earned after a Cooper masterclass with the bat against us. A day where one man's brilliance nearly won the match for the wrong side — but ours had just enough brilliance of its own to see it off.
