๐งข 1st XIv FC Frittenden CC ยท HomeformLLLLWOn Tuesday last, the thirtieth of June, we had the pleasure of welcoming Frittenden CC to our ground, though the fortune of the coin was not with us, and our visitors, winning the toss, elected to take first strike upon a wicket that promised well for the bowlers.
Sent into the field, our men set about their work with a will. The Reverend E Moore played the innings of the day for our opponents, compiling a most watchful 29, and found willing company in F Still, whose 28 owed as much to patience as to power. Elsewhere the honours lay with our attack, for Rev Hallward and E Baker were both sent back without troubling the scorer, and it was R Warde who proved quite unplayable, turning the ball prodigiously to claim five wickets without cost, while W H Fryer, bowling with admirable steadiness, gathered four for none himself and brought the innings to its close.
Our reply began unhappily, with J Amies, C Amies and A Startup all departing for ducks in quick succession, a sorry procession that threatened for a time to undo the good work of the morning. I was fortunate enough to contribute sixteen runs at a critical juncture, and steadier heads thereafter saw us home in some comfort, the eleven completing the task by eight wickets.
It was, all told, a thoroughly enjoyable fixture, and if fortune favoured us in the end, it was no more than our opponents' generous and sporting conduct deserved in return.
