The toss went against us, and Frittenden had no hesitation in choosing to bat, leaving us to toil away in the field on a day that, in the end, taught us rather a lot about the fine line between glory and farce. Rev E Moore led their reply with a watchful 29, well supported by F Still's 28, but it was R Warde who turned the afternoon on its head, spinning through the Frittenden order for a quite unplayable 5 for 0, with W H Fryer chipping in a handy 4 for 0 alongside him. Rev Hallward and E Baker both departed without troubling the scorers, and the visitors were skittled for a total that, frankly, did us proud.
Our reply, I must confess, was rather more of a family affair in the wrong sense — J Amies, C Amies and A Startup all took the long, silent walk back for ducks, and the Duck Club ledger swelled accordingly. I did what I could with 16 of my own, more application than artistry. Still, we got over the line by 8 wickets, which papers over a multitude of batting sins.
There was history made too: W H Fryer's 51 runs this season see him leapfrog W Goad into 2nd on the club's all-time run-scorers list, while his 6 wickets today move him past X Carroll into 3rd among our all-time wicket-takers. He and R Warde, who now leads the 1868 wicket charts with 9, are quietly having themselves a season. A good day for the club, ducks and all.
