Marden CC, Kent ยท HomeformWWLLWWednesday last, the thirtieth of June, saw Marden Cricket Club of Kent as our guests, and having won the toss, I sent our men in to bat first, a decision that pleased me well before the day was done.
Our innings, though brought to a close all out, owed much to E Case, whose knock of 22 was the mainstay of our total and a capital effort by any measure. Fortune was less kind elsewhere, M A Atkins departing without troubling the scorers, though E M Owens's contribution of 5 runs carried him past R Warde and into seventeenth place upon the club's roll of run-getters, a distinction worth recording in these pages.
Taking the field, our visitors fared no better against an attack that found both length and edge. J Lefeaver, W Hammond and T Savage were each sent back to the pavilion without scoring, and their innings closed all out before our bowlers had scarce broken sweat. I had the good fortune to take six wickets without conceding a run, while E Case lent admirable support with three for none, a performance that carried him past C French Jnr into seventeenth upon the club's list of wicket-takers.
The match ended in a fine win for us by eighteen runs, and I could ask no finer start to the season, E Case leading our run-getters and I our wicket-takers thus far. Our visitors bore their reverse with the good grace one expects of a Kent eleven, and I trust the return fixture will prove as keenly fought.
