It was not, in truth, our finest hour with the willow โ the innings closed with the whole side back in the pavilion, and E Hayes will not thank me for recording that his contribution was a duck. But E Fryer batted with real substance, carrying his innings through to 41 not out, and it was his effort alone that gave us anything to defend.
With the ball, however, we found our form, and handsomely. Charles Arkcoll's innings folded for the same total as ours, Ken Heathfield doing the bulk of their scoring with a well-made 22, but he had little support โ Ron Parsons went for a duck, and the rest could find no lasting answer to our attack. I turned the ball prodigiously from the first over and finished with figures of 5 for 0, a spell I shall not soon forget, while A Pratt bowled with fine control for 4 for 0 and N Judge chipped in with a useful wicket of his own.
It made for a splendid afternoon's cricket, and a victory by 24 runs that flattered neither side but rewarded, I think, the tighter bowling. Charles Arkcoll played the game in excellent spirit throughout, and we parted, as ever, the best of friends over tea in the pavilion โ two points banked, and thoroughly earned.
