🧢 1st XIv CA Charles Arkcoll · HomeformLWLWWSaturday last saw the Charles Arkcoll men come to Linton Park, and I confess winning the toss and choosing to bat felt like the shrewdest decision I'd made all week — quite possibly all season.
Our innings had its wrinkles. E Fryer batted with real composure for an unbeaten 41, the sort of knock that papers over a good many cracks elsewhere in the order, and papering was required, for poor E Hayes departed for a duck that I shall tactfully describe as forgettable. Still, the lads got the total up, and I liked our chances as we took the field.
If Hayes had a morning to forget with the bat, he made up for it tenfold with the ball — five wickets for the taking, a proper five-for, and thoroughly deserved after his earlier misfortune. Cricket has a wonderful habit of squaring things up like that. Ken Heathfield fought a lone hand for the visitors with 22, but Ron Parsons went back to the pavilion without so much as a run to his name, and with A Pratt and N Judge chipping in behind Hayes, the innings never threatened to get away from us.
A win by 24 runs, then, and a thoroughly satisfying afternoon's work. Fryer tops our run charts and Hayes now leads the wicket column for the summer — early days yet, but promising ones. Onwards indeed.
