Sissinghurst CC · AwayformLWLWWRight, well — 6th July, away at Sissinghurst, and my bold decision to bat first at the toss will not be troubling any highlight reels. Both Goads, W and T, departed without scoring, and the innings folded for nought all out, which is about as thin a total as this club has ever put up. I confess I strode out to the middle full of confidence and returned rather quicker than intended, my own footwork doing me no favours whatsoever.
Still, defending nothing concentrates the mind wonderfully, and for a spell we made a proper fist of it. H Freed was magnificent, tearing through their order for a five-for at a miserly 6-0, ably supported by C Amies (3-0), while I chipped in with three wickets myself — small consolation, but I'll take it. F Gilbert, G Crampton and E W Peterson all went for ducks, and only H Weston, with a defiant 23, gave Sissinghurst anything resembling a total. Seven wickets in hand told its own story by the close.
There was, at least, something to toast in the wreckage: W Goad's four runs saw him leapfrog W H Fryer to sit top of the club's all-time run charts, and Freed's six wickets moved him past J C Crawford into eleventh on the all-time list — the lad is quietly building something special. F F Crawford still leads our season's run-scoring and Freed the wickets.
Verdict: nought all out is no way to win a cricket match, however heroic the bowling. Back to the nets, heads up, and let's find some runs from somewhere.
