Sissinghurst CC ยท AwayformWWLWWWednesday last found us away at Sissinghurst, where the toss fell to my call and I had no hesitation in taking first use of the wicket. It cannot be said we prospered greatly at the crease, and the innings closed with both W Goad and T Goad sent back without scoring, a sorry brace of ducks upon the card. Yet there was cause for quiet satisfaction withal, for W Goad's four runs carried him past W H Fryer to stand now first upon the club's roll of run-getters, a distinction earned in modest circumstance.
In the field we acquitted ourselves rather better. Sissinghurst's reply yielded little beyond H Weston, whose twenty-three were the runs that mattered, while F Gilbert, G Crampton and E W Peterson each departed the crease untroubled by the scorer's pencil. H Freed bowled quite beautifully, his figures of six wickets for none carrying him past J C Crawford to eleventh upon the club's list of wicket-takers, a five-for richly deserved. I was glad to lend a hand myself, taking three wickets without cost, and there is no keener pleasure for a captain than to see his bowling attack run so true.
For all that, the day belonged to our hosts, who ran out winners by seven wickets. We return to the nets a little humbled but not disheartened, and with F F Crawford leading our run-getters this season and H Freed our bowlers, the eleven has every reason for good heart.
