On Wednesday last, the 26th of June, we journeyed away to meet Sutton Valence Cricket Club, taking the field first as our visitors opened their innings. Mr T Jordan gave a fine display in reaching 52, ably supported by G Fuller with a useful 23, before the innings closed. Our bowling did its work well, F Edmed and C Gurr being sent back without troubling the scorers, and L Barker was in capital form, taking four wickets without conceding a run. I too found some rhythm that afternoon, closing with four wickets for no runs, a performance which carried me past R Morris into sixth place among the club's all-time wicket-takers.

Our own reply, I regret to record, was a sorrier affair. E Skinner, W Goad and X Bowles were each dismissed without troubling the scorers, and twelve byes found their way into the book, no great credit to W Goad on what was evidently a testing day for him. There was one small crumb of comfort, for X Bowles's four runs carried him past R Warde into twelfth place upon the club's list of run-getters.

For the season thus far, M A Atkins stands at the head of our run-scoring with 21 to his name, and L Barker leads the wicket-taking with his four. On this occasion, however, we were undone by an innings and 23 runs, a margin that admits no argument. Sutton Valence played the better cricket and are to be heartily congratulated, while our own fellows must look to the nets before next we meet.
