Winning the toss, I had no hesitation in batting first — and for once my judgement wasn't entirely misplaced. G Kemp's 39 gave us the platform, G G Hearne chipped in a tidy 25, and extras weighed in with a generous 33 of their own — practically an all-rounder in their own right. Not every man's afternoon went to plan, mind: L M Richards will be buying the drinks after his golden duck, poor fellow.
Defending the total, we turned to the ball and found our man of the match twice over in J Wootton, whose 6-0 ran through The Mote like a scythe through summer grass, backed up handsomely by G G Hearne's 3-0 and C Leveson-Gower's solitary strike. Three of their number — W Wright, K McAlpine and G E Champion — departed without troubling the scorers, though F M Atkins's determined 37, Major Spens's unbeaten 31 and H Picket's 27 kept us honest to the very close.
Amid it all, a nod to the history books: F S W Cornwallis's 12 runs eased him past A M Streatfield into third on the club's all-time run charts, while Wootton's nine wickets this match lifted him past F Garrett into sixteenth among our wicket-takers — the old boys shuffling up to make room.
In the end, honours shared and neither side able to land the killer blow. A draw, then — the cricketing equivalent of agreeing to disagree over tea, and no bad way to spend a Monday.
