The Mote CC ยท HomeformWLWLWOur visitors from The Mote came to us on Monday last, the sixteenth of July, and the toss falling to us I did not hesitate to send our men in first, a decision I confess pleased me well before the day was out. G Kemp gave the innings its backbone with a capital knock of 39, and was well supported by G G Hearne, whose 25 kept the score moving along at a fair pace. Extras, too, played no small part, a generous 33 finding their way to the total through the carelessness of the trundlers. I cannot pass over poor L M Richards, sent back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers, though such misfortunes befall the best of us in turn.
Taking the field to defend our total, we found The Mote no easy visitors to dislodge, F M Atkins batting soundly for 37 and receiving steady assistance from Major L T Spens, unbeaten on 31, and H Picket with 27. Yet three of their number, W Wright, K McAlpine and G E Champion, departed without scoring, largely on account of J Wootton, who bowled with fine control to take six wickets, well backed by G G Hearne with three and C Leveson-Gower with one. I was glad, too, to contribute my own small share of 12 runs, which I am told carries me past A M Streatfield into third place among the club's run-getters of all time, while Wootton's fine analysis lifts him past F Garrett into sixteenth on the wicket-takers' roll.
Neither side could force the issue, and honours were shared in a draw that did credit to both elevens.
