The lads went out and had their say with the willow, though I'll leave the precise arithmetic of our innings to the scorebook rather than my memory, which grows hazier with every pint of shandy.
Then it was our turn in the field, and here the tale turns rather more interesting. Their top order gave us some trouble — R Lipscombe top-scored with a stubborn 28, well supported by L Hulbert's 23 and F Abbott's 21 — but beneath that there was precious little for the scorers to trouble themselves with. R Warde, E A White and X Hodge all trooped back for ducks, poor souls, and the rot was largely of J Woollett's making: five wickets for not a run conceded, a spell of real quality and thoroughly deserved. T Gandy chipped in admirably alongside him.
It was, in truth, a day for the history books rather than the result column. J Down's 34 runs carried him past T Gandy to the very top of the club's all-time run-scorers, while J Woollett's five-for saw him leapfrog R Morris to become our leading wicket-taker of all time — both now sit atop the 1865 season charts besides.
We were beaten by an innings in the end, no use pretending otherwise. But with milestones tumbling like that, I'd wager we'll be better for it next week.
