๐งข 1st XIv SU 1st Innings Yalding United ยท AwayformLOn Monday last, the twelfth of June, we journeyed to meet Yalding United in the first innings of what promised to be a keenly contested fixture. Winning the toss, I had no hesitation in electing to bat, judging the day fair and the wicket true, and our men went to the crease in good heart. Foremost among them stood J Down, whose innings of four and thirty runs was a capital knock indeed, sufficient to carry him past T Gandy and into first place upon the club's roll of all time run scorers, a distinction he wears with credit and one that places him likewise at the head of our run getters for the present season.
Yalding United's reply, however, proved the sterner test of our fortunes. R Lipscombe led their effort with eight and twenty runs, well supported by L Hulbert with three and twenty and F Abbott with one and twenty, while R Warde, E A White and X Hodge were each sent back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers. Yet it was J Woollett who claimed the honours of the day, his five wickets a fine and richly deserved return that carries him past R Morris to the summit of the club's wicket taking annals, T Gandy lending able support with the ball besides.
For all these individual triumphs, the match itself went against us, our visitors prevailing in the end by an innings and 89 runs. It was a chastening afternoon, but a fair result honestly earned, and one from which I have no doubt our eleven shall return the stronger next week.
