๐งข 1st XIv MC Maidstone CC ยท HomeformLDLWDRev F A Leveson-Gower here, offering the club's account of our fixture with Maidstone CC on Monday last, the fifth of August, at our own ground.
Winning the toss, I put our visitors in, and it must be said they made handsome use of the opportunity. Mr B G Ellis batted with real authority for an unbeaten 84, while C H Ellis and C W Howlett each brought up a fine half-century of 72 and 66 respectively, and their total innings closed unfinished, a testament to the soundness of their batting order throughout. Our trundlers laboured manfully in the heat. H G Smith bowled with the greatest effect, taking three wickets for his pains, and was well supported by Charles Wycherley and Ernest Cruttenden, each claiming a brace, though the Maidstone willow proved rather too much for containment that afternoon.
Our reply, I confess, fell some way short of the mark required. Guy Bracher gave the innings its backbone with a capital knock of 43, and found useful company in Charles Wycherley, who made 24, and P Le Feaver, who contributed 21. I myself was glad to add 17 to the total before being sent back to the pavilion. It was, on the day, not enough, and we went down by 157 runs, a margin that speaks plainly enough without further comment from me.
Yet the afternoon was not without its cheer. Bracher's innings carried him past W H Fryer to sixteenth upon the club's all-time list of run-scorers, and Smith's three wickets saw him move past H Freed into fifth among our wicket-takers, achievements of which both may be justly proud. Maidstone played the finer cricket and deserved their victory; we shall return to the nets and trust to better fortune next week.
๐งข 1st XIv HC Hothfield Place CC ยท HomeformWLDLWSaturday last, the third of August, saw Hothfield Place CC as our guests, and the toss falling kindly to me, I had no hesitation in sending our visitors into the field first.
Our batting gave a good account of itself. Guy Bracher led the way with a well-made fifty of 65, and he was ably followed by A C Hills, whose 62 carried him past his own half-century, and I was fortunate enough to contribute 62 of my own, which I confess gave me no small satisfaction. The extras column, too, played its part handsomely, yielding a useful 52. Taken together, our fellows left our opponents a solid total to chase.
Hothfield Place replied in style, and it must be said their batting was of a high order. R K Price top-scored with a fine 81, H C Baird followed with a fine half-century of 76, and A E Paret added a well-made 65 of his own, so that we were kept in the field a good while. We did have our moments, K McAlpine being sent back without troubling the scorers, and R H Mitchell did the damage with three wickets, well supported by G H Cartwright and C Norman with one apiece.
Worthy of note besides was F S W Cornwallis, whose modest seven runs carried him past Jack Fryer into fourth place among the club's run-scorers, a quiet distinction on a day when neither side could force the issue. Honours were shared, and a draw against so capable a side is no mean result.
