๐งข 1st XIv SC 1st Innings Leeds Castle CC ยท HomeformLWLLWWinning the toss upon a fair Wednesday, the sixteenth of July, I had no hesitation in asking our visitors, Leeds Castle CC, to take the field first, the day being kindly disposed towards batsmen. Our innings, once concluded, owed its substance chiefly to two contributions of real merit. I was fortunate enough to find my touch and put together a score of 49, and found a steady ally in Arthur Cornwallis, whose 23 gave the innings a welcome solidity when it was most needed. Between us a foundation was laid upon which the remainder of the eleven might build, and though I shall not weary the reader with a stroke-by-stroke account, it was, I may say without undue pride, a satisfactory afternoon's batting.
With the total set down, our bowlers and fieldsmen took up the task in earnest, and applied themselves to such good purpose that Leeds Castle CC were dismissed without ever threatening to trouble us, the innings closing well within the compass of our first total. The margin at the close stood at an innings and 58 runs, a result as decisive as it was gratifying, and one that reflects credit upon the whole side rather than any single hand.
I am told, too, that my 49 carried a happier significance beyond the day's play, having advanced me past W Wilson to thirteenth place among the club's run-scorers of all time, and placed me at the head of the 1st XI's run-getters for the present season. Such things matter little beside the pleasure of a match well fought, but I record them gladly for the club's book. To Leeds Castle CC I extend our thanks for a sporting contest, and our hope of their good company again before the season is out.
